Privet Hawk Moth

Privet Hawk Moth.

I have not been out birding for a couple of weeks now , mainly work related with a training course yesterday and its been fairly quiet of late on the birding front , however i came across this Privet Hawk Moth at work the other day , its the second one i have seen here , if you have never seen one the size of it is quite striking , its not the most colourful of hawk moths but still impressive all the same .

Pleasent Couple of Hours spent at Oare

Avocet.

I spent a couple of hours at Oare Marshes this morning and even though it was fairly quiet i had a good time watching some close Avocets protecting one of their chicks , reading the Oare Marshes web site they mentioned there were 3 chicks present however i only saw just one , perhaps the other 2 were resting out of sight ( i hope ) .

I loved watching this chick feeding and running around , all the time the parents were near by and god help anything getting to close , they saw off Coots , a family party of ducks , a Black Headed Gull and even a Mute Swan ventured to close for comfort at one point .

Sorry this is our Island .

There was not much else around , a couple of adult Med Gulls flew over the East Flood , there were good numbers of Redshank , i only saw 4 Black Tailed Godwits , there were a scattering of Lapwings and up to 4 Little Egrets , there were a few song birds calling such as , Sedge , Reed and Cettis Warbler plus a half dozen Common Swifts were quite low over head and i even attempted a photo or two .
